Being a social media manager isn't always an easy feat.
However, with the right tools, organisation skills and some strong boundaries in place, it is so rewarding.
It has given me the freedom to work from wherever I want, whenever I want (within reason!) and for what I feel I'm worth.
Since being a social media manager, it's allowed me to be a fully present mother to Lorenzo, spend more time with my family, buy a house and start renovating it, take days off whenever I needed to (particularly during this pregnancy I've definitely needed some me time) and I've been able to make more money than I did when I was working at a huge corporate company.
Since the entire world realised the importance of having business online, more businesses than ever before are wanting to build their online presence.
And if you feel like you have a knack for being organised, creating content, and staying up to date with the latest trends, then becoming a social media manager just might be the career for you!
So, without further ado, I want to dive into a few things you should master before starting (or even if you've already started!) your social media manager journey. To ensure a stress free, fun career.
Learn some optimisation tips:
Hashtags, Bio, Tags, Captions
There are a few ways you can boost profile views and how easily people find you with a few optimisation tricks.
Your bio is one of the first place to start, it tells you everything you need to know about a business from those few lines, and this needs to include the right details to make you (and your services) easy to find.
Hashtags are another great way to boost your posts, and allow people to find you in your niche and what you are offering, these need to be targeted and specific.
A successful SMM is also going to need a bit of a writing skills for the captions too. You want to be snappy, but meaningful and engaging too.
Practice visuals:
Creative, Highlights, Branding
Social media is very visual as we know, so you need to have a creative flair if you’re running a page and creating any graphics, or be able to organise the content you do have in a way that looks good for the brand.
Quality is essential here, as well as consistency (both in posting and branding). Get on Youtube and spend some time figuring out Canva. It's an incredible tool for SMM's and I heavily rely on it!
TIP: Instagram highlights are a key tool to gather all the key information and content about the page, and making these clear and eye-catching can be the difference between those that stay on your page and those that leave if these are empty or outdated.
Get used to different types of content:
Carousels, Lives, Reels!
You want to include a mix of content on a social media page to keep the content interesting and engaging and keep the audience wanting more.
These should be related to your brand and business category, answering the needs of your target audience, and also be including some trending posts in there too (this seems like a lot but this is where social calendars and trend spotting come in!)
Speaking of trends, Reels are going to be your best friend for building your page, so find some trending audios (Go through the reels page and if the audio has a little arrow next to it - it's trending!) save the audio, get some inspo and then create it to your niche!
Know your audience:
Engage, Research, Share
Once you have defined your niche and ideal target customer, you can target them with your content plan as well as your daily engagement time.
Engaging with your audience is key to not only growing your following but converting those into customers. Keeping up to date with your audience posts also allows you to learn about their latest interests and needs.
There is a way to engage effectively, though, and this makes the difference as much as who you follow (hashtags come in handy here).
Get comfortable in the DM’s:
Reply, Outreach
Replying to everyone in your DM’s is key for business, within at least a 24 hour period. It sets the tone for communicating with you and means you won't miss any exciting opportunities.
